MPE Building, FMW Phase 2

Emeryville Redevelopment Agency
Emeryville, CA
This project is Phase 2 of the Former Merchant Whitney site redevelopment for the City of Emeryville. Phase 1 included the demolition, excavation and remediation of the site and this phase consists of the construction of a Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) building, installation of the MPE system, installation of associated utilities and construction of electrical pads, and construction of connections to groundwater remediation wells. In-Situ Thermal Treatment (ISTT) with Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) is a remediation technique that uses heat to mobilize contaminants in the ground while using vacuum extraction to remove them. A central building houses the equipment for treating the extracted vapors and liquids, but the treatment itself happens underground, where heat is introduced to the soil. The MPE wells collect the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other contaminants that are volatilized or steam-stripped by the heating process and are sent to the aboveground building for separation and treatment. MCK is providing CM&I services from Design through project Closeout.
