Al Cochran

This month, we are highlighting the amazing Al Cochran! ‘Uncle Al’ has been with MCK for 10 incredible years, since the company had less than ten employees! Although his official title is Senior Construction Inspector, he’s known for being a swiss army knife onsite, constantly challenging himself to tackle the inevitable challenges that spring up. Al has devoted many a day and night shift supporting inspection of our projects at EBMUD, SFO, SFPUC and beyond.

One of Al’s favorite projects during his tenure at MCK was the SF Central Subway China Town Station. Jumping on the project shortly after the main excavation was completed, he was amazed at the things that can be found 200+ feet below the city of San Francisco. He was inside one of the tunnels inspecting the track layout when the site lost power, plunging everything into total darkness… Even using his phone flashlight, it was completely quiet and spooky!

Recently, Al was an Inspector at the Happy Valley Pumping Plant, which received the CMAA Infrastructure <$49M – Owner Special Project award. Congratulations to him and the entire Happy Valley team! Not only is Al making sure the job site is hitting it out of the park, but outside of work he’s also a baseball umpire—calling strikes on and off the job site.

MCK is so happy to have Al on the team and excited to see what amazing things he’ll get up to next!

Favorite Project:

Chinatown Subway Station

MCK provided Construction Management services for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority’s (MUNI) Central Subway Tunnel Project. MCK provided services for the tunnel as well as the construction of four substations and had over 15 employees on the project, including a Field Engineer, Resident Engineer, Lead Inspector (Al's role!), Inspectors, and Estimators. MUNI’s Central Subway Project was the second phase of the Third Street Rail Project in San Francisco, which linked neighborhoods in the southeastern part of the city with retail and employment centers downtown. The $1.5B tunnel project reduced air and noise pollution, relieved surface congestion, and shortened travel times, while also connecting to BART and Caltrain to give riders an easy route to destinations outside the city. The Chinatown Station of the Central Subway Program Project was recognized for advancing underground engineering technologies and was presented with the Project of the Year 2020 award at the ITA Tunneling Awards 2020.
