Transbay Transit Center

Transbay Joint Powers Authority
San Francisco, CA

MCK provided key staff to the Construction Manager, Turner Construction, for the construction of the Transbay Transit Center in downtown San Francisco. The Transbay Transit Center Project is a visionary transportation and housing project that has transformed the San Francisco Bay Area’s regional transportation system by creating a “Grand Central Station of the West” in the heart of a new transit-friendly neighborhood. The $4B project replaced the current Transbay Terminal at First and Mission streets in San Francisco with a modern regional transit hub connecting eight Bay Area counties and the State of California through 11 transit systems: AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, Muni, SamTrans, WestCAT Lynx, Amtrak, Paratransit and future High Speed Rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim. MCK held the Resident Engineer & inspection roles overseeing the shoring and excavation of the train box for the Transbay Terminal Transbay Joint Powers Board construction management oversight (CMO) team. The train box will houses high speed rail and Caltrans train stations. MCK oversaw the installation of over 4,000 linear feet of soil mix shoring wall 100 feet deep that cost about $40 million, installation of a 250 foot deep $60 million buttress to secure the adjacent Millennium Towers building, temporary bridges to carry existing traffic across Beale, Fremont and 1st streets, trestle bridges to carry construction traffic and internal bracing for the over 250,000-square-foot excavation to a depth of 65 feet.
